How to use
- Enter or paste the text you want to encode.
- Choose spaces, new lines or no separator between bytes.
- Copy the complete binary result or download JSON.
Text characters and their UTF-8 bytes
Text must first be encoded as bytes before those bytes can be displayed in binary. This tool uses UTF-8 and writes every byte as eight bits, including leading zeros.
ASCII letters use one byte, while many other characters need several. Emoji therefore produce several eight-bit groups rather than a single binary character code.
Representations and workflow
UTF-8 represents H as the byte 0x48, displayed here as 01001000. Text encoding preserves spaces, line breaks and control characters in the input.
Hi01001000 01101001H and i each use one UTF-8 byte; other characters may use more than one.
Precision and validation
The byte separator changes only how the result is displayed. It does not insert additional bytes into the encoded text. Binary to Text ignores whitespace between the binary digits.
Interpreting and reusing the result
No Unicode normalization is applied. Visually identical strings may contain different code points and therefore different bytes. Unpaired surrogate input is rejected instead of silently replaced.
Numbers: up to 500 lines / 1 MiB, at most 4,096 characters per numeral. Fraction output: 1–128 digits. Text and byte data: 64 KiB. Bitwise operations: 8–256 bits. Workers stop after 30 seconds; inputs are not uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Does this support emoji and Chinese text?
Yes. Text is encoded as UTF-8, so Unicode characters can occupy several eight-bit byte groups.
Is this ASCII encoding?
UTF-8 has the same byte values as ASCII for characters 0–127. Other characters use UTF-8 sequences; the ASCII Converter deliberately rejects those characters.
Do separators change the encoded message?
No. Spaces and new lines between output bytes are display separators. Actual spaces and line breaks in your input are encoded as their own bytes.
Is my input sent to a server?
No. Computation runs in a browser worker. DevToolsy does not upload or store your input.
What does Copy include?
Copy exports the selected displayed value. Download JSON preserves strings and diagnostic codes; it does not turn large numbers into floating-point values.
