How to use
- Choose a still PNG, JPEG or WebP image.
- Select JPEG or WebP, adjust quality and select Compress image.
- Compare the size and preview before downloading the result.
Balancing image size and quality
Compression here means encoding a still image as JPEG or WebP at your chosen quality. It is useful when a smaller download matters and a lossy output is acceptable.
The preview and byte count let you judge the trade-off together. A smaller file can lose detail, while an already efficient source may not become smaller at all.
What the quality setting changes
Lower quality often reduces the encoded size by allowing more visual loss. Check edges, fine texture and text in your own image when comparing results.
Pixel dimensions stay the same. If the image is much larger than its display size, resizing it can be a separate way to reduce the amount of image data.

When compression increases size
The browser creates a new encoding. The original may already use a more efficient encoder or a lower quality, so a new result can be larger.
The size comparison reports that increase rather than treating every run as a saving. There is no target-size guarantee, lossless PNG optimizer or animation support.
Keeping a useful result
Download saves the current encoded image. Keep the original separately, and use it as the source for another attempt rather than repeatedly compressing a lossy output.
Still PNG, JPEG and WebP: 20 MiB, 24 megapixels and 8,192 pixels per side. Base64: 2 MiB. SVG: 1 MiB. File inspection: 1 GiB with only the first 256 bytes read. Browser codec support varies. No files are uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Can I compress a PNG?
You can use a supported still PNG as input, but this tool outputs JPEG or WebP. It does not perform lossless PNG recompression.
Can I require an exact file size such as 100 KB?
No. You control format and quality, then inspect the actual result. The tool does not search for a fixed target size.
Does compression reduce width and height?
No. Use Image Resizer when you need fewer pixels. This workspace changes the encoding at the existing dimensions.
What happens to transparency?
JPEG fills transparent pixels with the chosen background. WebP can retain transparency; inspect the resulting preview.
Is the compressed image uploaded or copied automatically?
No. Processing is local. Use Download to save an image; this workspace does not automatically copy it to your clipboard.
