How to use

  1. Paste text, open a file, or try the sample.
  2. Choose the format. The result updates as you type.
  3. Copy the result or download the converted data.

Understanding Base64 encoding

Base64 represents bytes using a small ASCII alphabet. Encode UTF-8 text or a local binary file for a system that expects a Base64 value.

Choose the standard alphabet or Base64url. File input uses the original bytes; it does not reinterpret a picture or PDF as text.

From text or file to ASCII

Text is converted to UTF-8 before encoding. Three bytes become four Base64 characters. A local file is read as raw bytes, including an empty file; nothing is uploaded.

Result

The default settings convert this input in one pass.

Choose the right alphabet

Standard Base64 uses + and /. Base64url uses - and _. Padding is enabled initially and can be omitted when the receiving format permits it. No line breaks or data URL prefix are added.

Encoding does not protect a secret

Base64 is reversible encoding, not encryption or compression. Binary size normally grows by about one third. Never treat encoded credentials as hidden, and check the format required by the receiving system.

Processing limits

Up to 5 MiB of input, 20 MiB of output, and 10 seconds per run. Text files must use UTF-8. Base64 encoding also accepts binary files. Documents stay on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Can I encode a file?

Yes. Open or drop one local file. Its bytes are encoded without uploading it.

Does this support emoji and non-English text?

Yes. Text is encoded as UTF-8 before Base64 conversion.

Is Base64url the same as Base64?

It uses a different alphabet for two characters. Select Base64url when your protocol requires it.

Can I remove the = characters?

Disable padding only when the receiving format allows omitted padding.

Is the result encrypted?

No. Anyone with the encoded value can decode it.
